1. Golpo Holo Shuru
Singer: Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal, Armaan Rashid Khan
Music direction and design: Indraadip Dasgupta
Lyrics: Prasen
Music Production: Shamik Chakravarty
Language: Bangla
Genre: Semi-classical/orchestral
Mood: Pathos-Romance
This one, designed and arranged by Indraadip Dasgupta, sounds beautiful thanks to the elaborate string section arrangements. The melody has traces of Raag Yaman and I also am reminded of this song from Bollywood called ' Sochenge Tumhe Pyaar'. Prasen is the lyricist for the song, and the amazing arrangements and music production are by Shamik Chakravarthy.
The live strings are by Chennai Strings Orchestra comprising violinists Murali, Sasikumar, Hemanth Raj, Selvaraj, Mohan Rao, Basker, Prabhu George, Chandrasekhar, Murali, Sasikumar, Hemanth Raj, Selvaraj, Mohan Rao, Basker, Prabhu George, Chandrasekhar Viola players Gopinath sett, Jayachandar, Anita Francis and Samson, Cellists Srinivas and Vijandran, and on Double Bass we have Bidhu Kayal, with B Yensone as the conductor. Pratik Srivastava's solo on the Sarod joins along and plays the Yaman-laden melody.
The Pianos are terrific as Arijit sings the Antara, "Shudhu Shonde", along with the Sarod, bass guitars and double bass. This line is so impactful, especially with the arrangements and Arijit's delivery. Mainak Bumpy Nag Chowdhury is the bassist. We get Armaan Rashid Khan, son of Lt. Ustad Rashid Khan to perform the Hindi lines "Piya Tora Kaisa Bhimaan", for which the original melody credits are given to Debajyoti Mishra and Rituparno Ghosh for the lyrics, from the album Raincoat. Armaan brings such a fresh perspective and all his classical Hindustani prowess comes to the fore.
Shreya Ghoshal devastates the heart with that high-pitched Soprano-style singing and the strings and Piano accompany it. Pratik plays the counterpoint on the Sitar, and although I hear Kalyani Ragam all through, the end of the Antara makes me wonder if there is some Purvikalyani Ragam here. Sukhanta Singh, Amey Londhe and M Sundar Raj are the recording engineers. Subhadeep Mitra is the mixing and mastering engineer.

2. If I Die Today
Vocals and Lyrics - Lyla
Music Composition and Production - Surel Ingale
Language:
Genre: Jazz
Mood: Groovy
This combination had me ensnared a couple of months ago with a song called 'Pomegaranet Lips,' and once again, Surel Ingale and Lyla make me feel love and tenderness and mesmerise me with their jazzy single. The trumpets call straight away, and they tell you, 'Please don't die, live another day'. Sambhav Pratap Singh is killing it with that Latin-dance-styled rhythm guitar display. The song carries more of a Latin Jazz tone with the trumpets playing that motif repetitively.
Lyla is terrific form singing with such virtuoso and her confidence and attitude is communicable. She has penned lyrics that are so intriguing and thought-provoking with lines like " If I die today, would the kids go to school, and learn of human pain, of wars, love, of broken rules and history's cruel refrain?". The interlude on the trumpet is sensational and it feels free and calming to hear this bit. The music production is quite interesting with sounds of the door-knock, cash register etc all mixed at the perfect places to give the song more life.
Surel is the composer and producer and the tracks are mixed and mastered by Onkar Tarkase. Sambha's guitar interventions are flawless and they keep the listener hooked all along. Lyla takes you on a wild ride in the outro with her improvisation and the guitars, trumpets and harmonies all follow suit. The director of the video is Akshita Agarwal, with DOP Mihir Patel.

3. Mudhal Mazhaithuli
Music composed, arranged & programmed by Sagishna Xavier
Singers: G V Prakash Kumar and Priyanka NK
Lyrics: Muthamil
Language: Tamil
Genre: Pop
Mood: Romantic
Sagishna Xavier has been just floating under the radar and for someone who follows indie Tamil music, he is not an unknown commodity. This is an excellent romantic single with arrangements that are elaborate. Sagishna composes the melody, and handles all the arrangements and programming. Muthamil pens the words and the lead vocalists are GV Prakash and Priyanka NK. He begins well as we have a 35-second intro, with the strings section by The Chennai Strings Orchestra, flute solo by Ramesh and bass guitars by Naveen Napier.
The melody is where Sagishna wins hearts with lines like "Katril eeram ne, kathal vanam nee", as we get the accompanying keys and rhythms enhancing the impact that the song has overall. Priyanka is a much better vocalist than GV and that is a known, hence we get to feel the melody even deeper in her lines like "Kaanum Yavum Nee Kaanal Tooram Nee". The way the bass guitars, flute and guitars (played by Godfray Immanuel) are arranged is a testament to Sagishna's understanding of music. When I hear the bassline by Naveen and parts of the melody I am reminded of Maestros 'Kannan Vandhu Padukindran'.
Sagishna does all the string arrangements as well and we get Yensone B conducting the session. Smith Asher does all the additional rhythm and vocal chops. The recording engineers are Vishnu Raj MR at 2barQ, Hari at 20dB, Kibi at 2 Keys Studio and Sundar at John Studio. The tracks are mixed by Kibi and mastered by Biju James & Jerald James Biju.

4. Sambrani Penthiri
Music Composed, Produced, and Arranged by Ankit Menon
Lyrics: Vinayak Sasikumar
Vocals: Adheef Muhamed, Ankit Menon
Music Producers: Parvatish Pradeep, Abin Thomas, Allan Varghese, Pranav Pradeep
Language: Malayalam
Genre: Folk-Pop
Mood: Dance
The heavy Piano guides us in the intro and I love the tempo of the song, making it catchy, when Adheef Muhammaed sings the title line with that thump, I am all set to dance. Sruthiraj is sensational with these percussions as always and by the time we get to the catchy chorus phrase "Gagaga Gagagag ga" performed by Adheef and Ankit Menon, we are floating high. Keba's solid Nylong guitars act like the rhythm guitar and the whistle and Harmonica all add such important undeniable flavors. OK Gopi can be heard playing the Shehnai and Nadaswaram.
The melody composed by Ankit is beautiful and it doesn't stop with the Pallavi, and when it extends to the charanam, Adheef is there to deliver with such poise and style in the high pitch with the line "Oh alva kannale, salwar chendale", we are awestruck. Cee Vee, and Allan Varghese play the additional guitars and Keba is the bassist. Adheef is terrific form exploring great vocal range and as much as is endearing, he also brings some mesmerism with the vulnerable-sounding line " Pullinjika Pullinjikka urinju urinju kudikkuvan, Urumbu njan karangi nikkanu, Oyarayaa Oyarayaa Marathil valinju keranu , charikkiyaloornu, Nournu thazhe veenanu"
The song is composed, arranged and produced by Ankit Menon, and there are some fantastic talents who have come on board as additional producers viz. Parvatish Pradeep, Abin Thomas, Allan Varghese and Pranav Pradeep. The recording engineers are Hariharan and Amal Mithu, with Balu Thankachan on mixing and mastering at 20db Sound Studios (Chennai). The superb words are penned by Vinayak Sasikumar.

5. Evideyaa Prakasham
Vocals: Ranjith Jayaraman
Lyrics: Manu Manjith
Composed and produced by Bijibal
Language: Malayalam
Genre: semi-classical pop
Mood: Hypnotic
Bijibal is always one of those excellent composers who think like Old school, composing a melody that fills the listener, and then the arrangements are elaborate to add to that. This begins with some Jathis with both the male and female vocals, and then the swaras are performed by the frame, We already have a fantastic intro for the song now as Ranjith Jayaraman bursts onto the scene with the high-pitched vocals. I love the rhythms and the acoustic guitar that accompanies it. The melody reminds me of this famous Thyagaraja composition called Maaravairi Ramani, so maybe there is an influence of Nasikabhushani Ragam.
Kudos to Bijibal for this composition in this stunning Raga, as not many composers have ventured here. The keys and synths are amping up the impact turning this into a hypnotic pop song. The interlude has the woodwinds playing a sultry melody, kudos to the soloist Subhash Cherthala, and in the background, the strings section is an excellent addition. The stanza is in blistering pace and Bijibal weaves movement after movement and Ranjith's fantastic delivery, filled with succulent ghamakas and jaunty rhythm guitars is just way too vibrant to miss. Manu Manjith is the lyricist. The female vocalist is Sangeeta Srikant.

6. Chhupaaya
Composed, produced and performed by Keshuv Huria
Written by Pankaj Pandya
Language: Hindi
Genre: Pop
Mood: Romantic
He owns every song with his distinct voice, delivery and tone that fits the love ballad genre and finally a sense of encompassing all this with a catchy soundscape. The singing is so mild and tethered in the intro "poori raat jaagi meri raaton ko bewaja, mere khaylon ko", but the guitars and mild strings keep it all very tight and interesting. The verse is short as Keshuv Huria lands in the chorus segment within 20 seconds.
The romance is brimming when He sings "chhupaaya, hai tujh se bhi chhupaaya". Dimple Saikia lends her voice in the backing vocals here. My favoruite part is how he ends the chorus segment with the last rendering of the words "chhupaaya", and that is the kind of chord progression that excites me as a music lover and music journalist. MRKLE plays the bass guitars and with style, but the heroes are the funky keys and rhythms.
Nothing is left plain and simple, as Keshuv goes soft and delicate with his singing and I love the improvisation with lines like "Kisi ko bhi nahi bataaya". The ability to write a good melody must be met with intent too and Keshuv does that as he brings on the bridge section (a nice mild humming that takes us along further) with a fresh set of notes that beautifully hover around our hearts "aasan tha kehna par kaha nahi, mumkin tha milna par mila nahi". Pankaj Pandya writes these exciting lines.
Keshuv doesn't stop there, as he writes another nice segment that ends with "tere liye maangi hui sab duaaon ko". The tracks are mixed and mastered by Sujith Hydher at Octaves Studio Chennai, Bhaskar Sarma is the recording engineer at Rabbit and Turtle Studio Mumbai.

7. Space
Written, composed & performed by: Saroj Kashyap
Produced by Varun Murali
Language: English
Genre: Rock-Ballad
Mood: Mild Pathos
Silence is Golden, but not always, especially when in a relationship where you need better communication. Saroj Kashyap is in no mood for the silence here as she sings with all her emotional thrust "Your silence drives me up the wall, makes me want crawl". Saroj has written the lyrics, and the melody and performed the lead vocals for this single which is part of her upcoming EP. That minor sense of estrangement comes from the gritty electric guitar notes played by Varun Murali and he is also on the acoustic guitars here.
The bassline kicks in and the song turns into a nice balance now with all the live instrumentals, and harmonies kicking in after she sings " For you are the balance I need". The evocative and passionate singing in the chorus segment is great to hear and I have been waiting for this rockstar to emerge and she sings "But make up your mind, For I can't stay in this space". I love the thumping drums that alternate between high energy and mild presence.
The bridge section feels unnerving but in a good way as this rock genre comes alive, with no half measures incorporated by Varun Murali as the man in charge of music production here. The nice backing vocal humming combines well with the heavy guitars and drums in the outro. The tracks are mixed and mastered by Varun at The Red Music Box. The video is by Amogh Aryan.

8. Tomake Bhalobeshe
Guest Composer: Arindom
Lyrics: Prasen
Singer: Arindom, Shirsha Chakraborty
Music Production: ZIA
Language: Bangla
Genre: Light Music/Pop
Mood: Romantic
A couple of songs were delightful in this album called 'Taandob' and this was definitely one of them that deserved some attention. Arindom is the guest composer with a song to his credit in this album and he has performed the lead vocals along with Shirsha Chakraborty. Adity Shankar and Sudipto Chowdhury are these guitarists and the melody that plays in the intro immediately grabs your attention.
The melody of the composition and lead vocals all remind us of some of the good songs that have come from Bangali MOvies and Bollywood of the past. It still is a tune that pleases the heart and when the arrangements like the keys, flute interventions and rhythms constantly keep you interested, it is impossible to avoid. Meira Segal is the flautist and Prasen is the man behind all the words. The song's sound design and arrangement are stunning thanks to the production of ZIA who we have heard in so many indie projects.
All the additional music production comes from Suvam Moitra, Sudipto Chowdhury and Crostec (Soumo-Shubho). The tracks are mixed and mastered by Suvam Moitra.
